The burning scent of apparently undiscovered origins is the symptom that intrigues and concerns me most. A bad ground isn't going to do that, it just sucks juice from the battery. You note that the smell goes away after a few minutes of driving, but that could simply be the result of air-flow cooling at road speeds. Have you tried to start it and just let it idle for an extended period of time, and if so does the smell persist? I'm actually hesitant to suggest that experiment, fires are bad things, but better to figure it out sooner than later.
Little else to offer except to agree with CMyles, you should have a close look at the catalytic converter and the integrity of the wiring harness that comes in its proximity. I have a '93 NA as well with ~300k miles on it and I am sometimes a bit alarmed at how warm the ignition key can be when removed after an extended drive, especially on hot days-- it doesn't singe my fingers, but it's definitely warmer than I think it ought to be so I may be doing some work under my car sooner than later before lasting damage might occur.
Good luck, these intermittent problems and undependability issues are very frustrating but ultimately fixable.
