Sorry, I don't know any short cuts for doing that fix. Sometimes I find it easier to reach from above. The tapered pin on the forward part of the assembly can be difficult to remove. The other part is secured to the shift tube with a pinch bolt for adjusting purposes. Maybe loosening that pinch bolt and then knock the transmission in to fourth gear (push the rod in to the unit, you may need to jiggle the gears to do that) and move the shift lever into third gear position (toward the dashboard). That will spread the linkage apart at the coupling and maybe make it easier to work on. After you've fixed the coupling you'll need to adjust the mechanism so don't tighten the pinch bolt until you have the unit in third gear with some "pins" in the appropriate places. (See your manual for the procedure.)
