When replacing the outer boot with the axle in the car, I pretty much follow Saabina's procedure, with one addition:
Grab on the axle with an 8" (or is it 9") vice grips placed so you can place it behind the shock to have something to pull against on the final pull to get the CV off.
Opening up the snap ring in the CV is a little tricky even if you've done a dozen of them. I ruined a pair of the cheapie snap ring pliers the first time because it takes a bit of force to open the snap ring. You may end up using a pair of thick needle-nose pliers instead.
Yeah, having a box of latex or blue harbor fright gloves and lots of paper towels on hand is a good thing.
