Is rebuilding brake caliper really that easy? Posted by CBS [Email] (#969) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CBS) on Thu, 6 Nov 2014 12:38:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saw a video on the tube of a caliper rebuild (toyota highlander) and it looked tedious but easy. Guys here have mentioned in the archives that the rebuilt whole calipers -- from foreign sources -- are junk and it's better to rebuild your own OEM. Any tricks to it? Site sponsor (eEuro) and that big auction site have rear kits, but no front kits (I need front left). Any sources that can be recommended?
Also, it looks like the sticky brake syndrome can happen with a bad flexible hose. On the video, he tested it by pushing on the piston in-situ with the caliper cracked open to see if fluid would squirt out. If the piston was very hard to retract and fluid didn't squirt out it was likely a bad caliper not a bad hose. If it retracted/sqirted and your slider pins worked well, the culprit was likely the hose. Hose is $18, so it might be a good idea to replace it anyway.
