I've had to knock almost every if not all tripod bearings off the shaft. Don't see how that could be done on my back under the car. The ones that have flown apart were either accidentally whacked by my careless work or were already beat up and sloppy from being run too long without grease. I suppose if the outer joint was good and it's splines were frozen into the hub it might be worth trying.
