I want to share a short story of "saving" money and wasting time.
A month ago I changed the driver's front wheel bearing in my 91 base model. I heard the bearing start to make noise and ordered up a replacement. When I was shopping for the part I noticed the supplier had two choices. One from Febi for $15, the other a Timken for about $60.
I asked myself how big a difference there could be between the two, and also remember using other Febi parts with good results. I opted for the $14 Febi and almost felt like I was getting over on the system somehow, but a couple days ago it became apparent who was getting over on who.
Turns out the bearing has already given up and demonstrates a fair amount of play when I push inward on the top of the wheel. When a helper does so while I peer at the backside I can see the CV joint rocking along with the motion. Upon discovery I kicked myself for not getting the Timken, but at the same time am surprised the Febi packed up so quickly.
It makes me wonder what the differences in construction could be. I remember replacing Timken bearings before and upon autopsy noted the they are of double taper roller construction. The bearing I replaced with the Febi was what looked like a double row cartridge style bearing. Cartridge bearings are not know for holding up well to thrust loads, such as those generated during cornering. Here in the mountains of western North Carolina, there are an awful lot of twisty roads!
Anyhow, the replacement bearing I order this time will definitely be a Timken. Luckily, all the hardware and circlips were treated to a coating of anti-sieze, and things will come apart much easier than they did a month ago.
Parts is parts? I knew better! Shame on me.
