I figured that toe can be measured on either the inside or outside of the tires so I just made two 90 degree bends in a 10 foot piece of 3/4" thinwall conduit. I lay it on the floor, slide it under the car and then roll it so the ends stand straight up along side the tires. Measure the gap at the front part and then reposition the tool to measure the back part then subtract to get the toe in or out. You need to bend the conduit so that the two legs are slightly farther apart than the normal distance between the outsides of the front tires and the legs must be parallel and bent accurately to 90 degrees. The conduit is stiff enough that it doesn't deflect like you might expect. Takes some practice to use efficiently but works great. Would be super cool with a helper and if you had two identical tools and a helper you could measure and set the toe in about 3 minutes.
