To answer your questions...
1) if the joint is just slightly rotten, you might be able to braze the leak to get by until parts arrive (and decent weather/time in your schedule). If it is broken, well, too late for that.
2) To DIY, you need a new cat back kit. I get OEM (Starla/Walker, eg from eeuro). I'd get stainless bolts (I live in the rust belt and an exhaust lasts 4 years at best). You will mostly need to dremel the old bolts in half to remove. 20 minutes with a dremel and a sawzall and the whole thing will be apart.
3) I am assuming you are driving a 900s of some description (you should mention model/year, because it makes a difference) and I will assume your exhaust is OEM and not some custom arrangement from some muffler shop. If your car is a 2.1L, you can buy the normal 2.1L cat back kit, which includes a resonator (the big one is the muffler, the small can at the back is the resonator). However, the resonator is always the first thing to corrode (cooler corrosive exhaust condenses first there)... so I've gone for the turbo exhaust which will fit but be louder. It bolts right up to the cat. Longer lasting, louder, but fine. If you have a 2.0NA, the flange is 3 bolt and you would order the 2.0L NA kit... unless many things are bad (like they were for me) and you throw on a 2.1L downpipe, cat, and a turbo cat back...
4) Getting an all new exhaust (at least cat back) on will avoid future breakage at an inopportune time! Better than patching, and from eeuro, it parts are cheap. DIY, it is unpleasant labour (lifting heavy stuff while lying on your back). I use blocks of wood as supports, but the hardest part is aligning it well so things don't knock or rub or rattle (eg against the heat shield)...
5) speaking of heat shields, before you order parts, take a look at yours. If it is rusted through, you will need to replace. That can be an eye opening experience if you live in the salt belt. Last time I did that, I ended up stripping the interior and repairing floors... sigh...
