Cold-weather no start: ECU, I think.

Drove my '89 NA about 120 miles yesterday, parked it in 9 degree weather, this morning in 7 degree weather went out and it cranked strong but no sign of firing.
Cracked fuel rail banjo bolt and fuel sprayed out. Put a timing light on it and regular spark but still no go.
I brought a little electric heater out and set it on passenger floor playing on the ECU and after about 20 minutes turned the key and the car started right up and runs fine.
This ECU ends in 580, from a '90 after the original died. It has partially died, the fuel pump signal isn't there, so I have been running it with fuel relay wire permanently grounded, fuel pump runs while key is on.
I guess this is a sign it can't really be trusted and I better start looking hard for a backup ECU.
It's a shame, the car starts better than any C900 I have owned, first turn of key usually, and runs sweet. I would have said I trusted it to drive across the country. Still would, but need to get that backup ECU.
Battery is strong and cranking was fast, and it has near-new plugs and wires and rotor-cap, also a new fuel pump it didn't really need after a rubber line inside the tank developed a split.
