Test for bad CPS or bad ignition amplifier?

My '89 NA quit on the road and shows no spark. My belief is, it's likely either a bad Hall sensor (crank position sensor) or a bad ignition amplifier, mounted on the coil, a design unique to the 88 and 89 NA cars.
Does anyone know a way to determine which is bad, other than substituting known good units for what's there?
For the crank sensor, I have instead a Hall Sensor distributor, from I guess an '88, that I could hook up to the wires that now lead to the sensor mounted down behind the harmonic balancer.
But when these cars were all over the junkyards, I failed to grab a coil with amplifier, and now I don't know where I'd get one.
I'm inclined to think it's the ignition amplifier. I'd really rather not install the distributor till I know about the ignition amp's health. I don't own a turn signal connector to use instead of the wiring down to the crank sender, so I'd end up having to butcher those wires to do the test.
Does anyone know what the EZK test connector, next to the fuse panel, is, and whether it can be used to test for a bad ignition amp or bad CPS?
