Noise/howling in 5th gear

Hi all..
So a few weeks ago, I am driving the 900, and suddenly detect this sheering type of sound-similar to brakes dragging on a rotor. I was quite loud, yet the sound only occurred in second gear. Yikes, I immediately pored a quart of 10w30 in crank case, and climbed backed in the car-thinking that the noise would still be there. Amazingly surprised the noise had gone away instantly!
Well, last week, noise in 5th gear appeared. Not the same type of sheering/dragging noise, but a low steady howling. I poured another quart down the tranny, and a bit lighter-however noise is not going away.
As for tut he tranny, this is a 93m 900s, but the tranny was replaced with an 88 example, and because of the exhaust pipes, there is no dipstick.
Question. Since the noise is only in 5th gear, any opinion on what specifically. I wonder if it is the actual gear worn down from lack of lubrication, or if it final drive noise/pinion bearings.
I have not rebuilt one in years, yet familiar. POndering to tear it down now, before it gets worse and a pinion bearing falls out. But if it was the pinion bearings, would there be noise in all gears, instead of the low howling only in 5th gear?
Thanks for any help
