power steering rack - metal failure Posted by dave24 [Email] (#457) [Profile/Gallery] (more from dave24) on Sat, 25 Apr 2015 16:07:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My son and I are replacing the rack and all lines on an 87 convertible. All parts from eEuro. The lines are new and the rack remanufactured. We all know this is a dirty messy job, but it was going along ok. Until... installing the first of the 2 lines to the track. These are always a struggle to get started and this one was no different, but after some careful manuevering, we got the threads started. Although they were a little stiff, the did not feel as though they were crossed, so continued with the slow task of tightening the first line. When the line as almost totally in, the metal outside of the threads on the rack suddenly broke and a piece fell out.
This is the third or fourth time I've replaced a rack on a 900, and I've never had anything like this happen. Has anyone else experienced this type of failure? Any thoughts on whether I did something wrong or was is a weak spot in this remanufactured rack?
