Door innards: best of options (or another)? Posted by ChrisMiami [Email] (#1592) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ChrisMiami) on Sun, 26 Apr 2015 12:02:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I wanted to exit the vehicle last week but the door opener just flopped back and forth: the connecting rod had come out of its hole in the latch mechanism.
Took the door card off, peeled back the moisture barrier (wish those were up for sale somewhere) and (eventually) found the hole that opens right in front of where the rod connects to the mechanism. There's a plastic something at the end of the rod that I assume was supposed to keep it in place, but it's broken off. The previous owner (I love that guy more and more) had wrapped it in Scotch tape to keep it in, so of course it eventually slipped out.
Now, I'm assuming this plastic thingy is nowhere to be found so I have to come up with some way to keep the rod in the hole it's supposed to be in. Here are the three options I have come up with:
1) Push-on axle nut (only mail order for 5/32" size)
2) Thread the end of the rod and find a skinny lock nut to screw on
3) Drill a hole sideways through the rod and use a tiny hitch pin
4) Score 2 slots in the rod and fit an e-clip onto it
5) Ball up a small piece of metal-filled epoxy I saw in the auto store that supposedly will bond to the end of the rod and won't pop off
Note, I have not added "reapply Scotch tape" to the list. :-)
Which of these would you do? Am I wrong about being able to find the genuine Saab part that originally served the purpose?
Thanks,
Chris
