Several things could cause this, adjustment and motor mount check is always a good place to start. You can remove the forward most cover on the passenger side of the transmission, it's more forward than the one with the dipstick, and look in there to see if the fifth gear fork is moving when the lever is thrown. The fork is secured to a tubular shaft with a floating steel pin about 9mm in diameter. If that pin was missing you'd be unable to engage fifth gear but someone would had to have intentionally removed the pin. The pin can be easily removed when the cover is off.
If the pin is in place you can remove the dipstick cover and view the shift selector engaging or failing to engage the slot in the fifth gear tube component. It's possible to break the back wall of the slot off of that weldment and that would prevent fifth engagement also. If I have time I'll put up some pictures later.
