Any good trick to removing valve stem seals?

I'm doing a head gasket (on a 9000 but you guys are more hands on and savvy and numerous than on that BB) and have the head apart, except for removing the old stem seals.
I know most folks send the head to a machine shop but has anyone tackled this? My needle nose Vise Grips won't quite reach down in there, and needle nose pliers don't have the needed grab.
By the way, incredible good material. At 197,000 miles and 19 years, intake valves look like new and exhausts do too once cleaned up.
