Believe it or not, the patina is mostly dried-on, crudded oil from a weepy rear main seal.
This isn't to say that this poor, abused vert hasn't seen its unfair share of salt - I'm told that it lived part of its life in CT and, before coming up here to live in ATL (in the ozone belt), it was in Tampa.
It got the saline double-whammy - road salt in the Northeast and airborne sea mist salt in the FL west coast.
Poor thing didn't have a chance and has developed rust is some funky places.
Somebody liked it, though. It has Bilsteins all around, a replacement top, recent clutch job (they didn't replace the primary shaft seal, though), and a tweaked APC. Looks like the front seal had been done at some point: that's the *only* spot on the bottom end of the engine that doesn't leak oil.
It was a lot of fun to drive after I replaced the turbo.
