C900 Manual Transmission problems - Ideas? Long! Posted by vsfoxe [Email] (#1025) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vsfoxe) on Thu, 4 Jun 2015 21:28:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1991 C900 SE Convertible 5-speed. Shifted into 3rd or 4th, it ground a little (like a sleepy synchro). At next stop 1st and second were fine, wouldn't go into 3rd or 4th, 5th and reverse were fine. It felt like there was no "gate" to 3rd/4th? Then I got it into 4th, but damn near impossible to get OUT of 4th. Then 3rd became semi-available, but a little hard to engage. Now 3rd is fine, but 4th is still semi-hard to engage. Feels like the entry to 4th is a tight, rubber-sided channel, takes about twice the effort to put into 4th. All the GEARS seem fine, but the entry to 4th is stubborn. I removed and examined the shift coupler, seems solid, and adjusted right. When I had the coupler off I ran the transmission shaft thru the gears, and 4th feels like something jams up when I try to go into or out of 4th. The rest of gears feel fine. Today the shift lever broke at the welded joint above the top ball, from the force I've been applying I imagine. I replaced the shift lever and everything seems the same. I THINK this car did something similar last summer, but not as bad, but I'm not sure of that. I'm pretty certain the 4th gear jam up is in the transmission. Any ideas or suggestions? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh - I checked the front motor mount and it is fine. Vern
