Drive train "lash" when letting off gas - Ideas?

I'm getting drive line / train lash when both accelerating and letting off the gas but it is much more pronounced when letting off, especially in 4th gear. A slight clunk, nothing major but lots of movement. Very audible also. If I feather the accelerator when accelerating or decelerating the lash is nonexistent. If I let off the gas quickly in 4th, it feels like the engine wants to drop out of the car. Very little movement in the shifter when this happens.
I just drove a friends 1992 5-speed with very little lash, hardly detectable, and now I know for certain that my 1990 isn't normal (unless they are supposed to act differently between those years.)
Had my Indy check all motor mounts, he says all are good. The front mount was replaced only 10k ago.
Just installed new tires, balancing, alignment and I've all but eliminated any vibrations. Very smooth at all speeds. I am getting no vibration upon acceleration (even under hard acceleration).
Separately (and maybe related) I am having some difficulty (sometimes) with gear selecting, especially 1st.
I'm going back to the Indy next week. Any ideas I could throw at him?
