shouldn't really make a difference in shifting.
Getting into first after a stop can be a little dicey in a well-worn 5-speed. The tips of the 1st gear teeth can get a little flat making it hard to slide the shifter it in.
My strategy for dealing with it when at a full stop is to push the clutch pedal in, partially engage 3rd gear then go to 1st.
Changing the transmission oil can also make a dramatic improvement in shifting.
If it grinds, as mine did when I got it, and the clutch disengagement is known to be good, then it's likely to be a bad pilot bearing. Pilot bearing holds the end of the primary shaft into the middle of the flywheel and lets it turn freely. When it's bad, it grabs the primary shaft and it's driven at the same speed as the flywheel with the clutch disengaged.
