It's really a big job. You must remove and completely disassemble the transmission to replace the pinion bearingS (there are two). You can see the back of the rear pinion bearing by removing the differential (as in the photo) but that doesn't mean that you can do any work on it*. The pinion bearings, stack height and other items have to be shimmed and adjusted carefully during reassembly using special techniques. It's possible to do the job without the Saab special tools but you'll still need precision measuring devices and a book with all the spec's of course.
As far as parts, once you take the entire unit apart you'll need (at least) all the gaskets and seals, a crush sleeve, stack shim assortment, both pinion bearings and possibly a lot of other stuff depending on the condition of the unit. These have 12 bearings total (one version has 13) and unless you have a known virgin unit on it's first set of pinion bearings it's wise to replace them all. Most pre-1990 units will need a 1-2 shift fork and those are not available new anymore.
* You can't remove the pinion shaft and bearing assembly by removing those four bolts that you see in the photo. That pinion gear is the end of a 16" long shaft that carries the entire synchromesh gear stack then passes through another large bearing and is fixed with a large nut on the opposite end.
