That fast blinking is meant to signal that a bulb isn't working. So, set your car in park somewhere, turn on the signal, and get out and look at everything front and rear on the side that has the problem.
The bulb bases themselves can get corroded, the lead contact points can sort of smoosh flatter and lose contact, the spring brass contacts can lose their spring and need rebending, those contacts can get corroded, and the outer sleeve the bulb fits into can get corroded. I know the vert is different from the hatch but I believe plagued by the same troubles.
I've got an '89 and the rear bulbs are all working but not long ago had a problem, from corrosion.
I sort of scraped it clean but I mean to get in there some day soon with a wire brush on a dremel tool and see if I can't make all the brass shiny bright on all bulbs and sockets and contacts, both sides.
