I took the car to the Saab specialist garage and they worked on my shifter. I had taken it apart only to the point that I took off the three screws and lubed up the ball/socket pivot points. Since that didn't cure it, I took it to the mechanic. They said they spent some time on it and got it fixed.
It isn't as it should be. I know this because I've had several 900s, all manual transmissions. The shifter does not feel worn out (I've had one of those).
Here is the most detail I can provide: (1)To me, the clutch feels like it operates correctly. It has a normal feel and does not feel as if it doesn't disengage completely. (2)The shift lever feels as if it is "stiff". That is, in the forward/backward direction as opposed to the side to side direction. (3)The shift into first, when coming to an intersection, is "reluctant" and seems to have a "notch". If I didn't shift past the notch, it would not be fully in first gear. Now, here's the part that seems like a clutch problem to me - if I slip it into first just before the car stops, it goes into gear perfectly! (4)I checked the oil level and it is fine.
In spite of how it slips into first easily when the car is rolling to a stop, it feels like a problem in the shift linkage as opposed to a clutch issue. But, I'd like to hear from those with more (and more specific) knowledge on the subject. Thanks to all who help...or try to. :)
