Usually the pinion bearing will whine. Depending on which one it could be under acceleration or under deceleration. Usually in this gearbox it is under acceleration and the higher the gear the easier it is to hear. If that is your noise I would stop driving the car until it is fixed. Most likely it is repairable at this point. If the bearing fails completely it will lock up which can be quite dangerous since the front wheels will lock up. Also once it locks up it is less likely you can get it repaired. There are a few people around the site that may be able to help direct you through the repair or may be able to perform the repair if you feel it is over your ability.
