The linkage probably needs to be adjusted. Procedure is in Bentley. You can substitute a long Allen wrench for the tool you use to line up the pin hole at the differential case (more easily done on the later dif covers. Use a small phillips head screwdriver to line up the hole at the shifter housing. All this will make more sense once you've read what Bentley tells you to do to adjust the linkage.
