My Kiwi friend:
I don't see any way the failed clutch could make smoke come out of the tailpipe.
Tailpipe smoke, if white and smelling of antifreeze, would indicate a coolant leak, most likely head gasket failure but possibly I guess thru the turbo.
Tailpipe smoke, if black and oily, would point to some kind of oil leak, maybe from the turbo but maybe also from head gasket or other source.
If a head gasket, the car might have leaked coolant into the engine while it was sitting and then a big shot got into the exhaust. Further running might clear the bulk of it out and then it might run without smoking or only some smoke at startup. But the head gasket would need to be attended to sooner or later and coolant level closely watched in the meantime.
Your clutch failure is I think an unfortunate coincidence, not linked to the smoking. How is it failed? Hydraulic system failure, which could be either the clutch slave, clutch master or a leak in the hose and line linking them? Or slipping worn-out friction disk?
Searching on this board will offer a wealth of tips on dealing with any of the likely ills of your car. Or keep asking and eager voices will chime in.
