Power dropping off very suddenly, throwing me forward.. Posted by poop deck pappy [Email] (#2012) [Profile/Gallery] (more from poop deck pappy) on Tue, 10 Nov 2015 06:03:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I searched the board yesterday attempting to understand what was making my car dump it's power right when the boost was going from mid yellow to the red. If you stood on the gas the power loss was so sudden it would throw you at the steering wheel. I found a few post describing this condition with many pointing to the over boost switch under the dash on my 88, vacuum lines and induction hoses that maybe not seated correctly. After spending a fair amount of time checking hoses, replacing AMMs and APC solenoids on the radiator support I was no closer to learning the problem.
Fortunately RS lives minutes from me. I asked him to look and he discovered a sound that I was missing. The ignition coil was making a very low buzzing sound. Being right next to the chattering APC solenoid I didn't hear the sound.
Went home replaced with a good unit and all drivability issues cleared immediately. I replaced the old with a new one when I purchased the car 63k ago. I never thought it would wear out that quickly. The drivability issues were insanely bad with this part malfunctioning. Over a week of the problem slowly getting worse the car eventually would not and could not stay running. It would start and run but only for a few minutes. When it would run it was very lumpy.
Hope this helps someone down the road. Not everyone has an RS next door.
