I thought the OEM cat was cat for most of the length with very little plumbing? At least it was for my 1993 4 bolt...
I've gone down the road of buying a new cat... if you are not in California, I don't think I even spent $150 for the Magnaflow from eeuro. Bolted right up. I'd measure for you but my 1989 NA is converted to a 4 bolt exhaust.
here is the 3 bolt version:

According to autozone, it is 17.75" long (Magnaflow p/n 22834):

For reference, according to summit racing, the 4 bolt Magnaflow is apparently 15.125" long (Magnaflow p/n 22832).
I can't guarantee these dimensions, but maybe that helps? There is a bit of room for adjustments in exhaust systems.
It may be close to the same cost to just order and install one of these newer cats yourself unless you have a reasonably low cost exhaust shop around.
I would definitely recommend magnaflow over bosal - the bosal has a wide flange that easily rattles against the heat shield. The Magnaflow has a more compact shape.
on the note of heat shields - you should inspect it's condition while the cat is out and most likely it will need replacement if it is not quite new. Eeuro does not seem to list one now, though I bought them in the past there. You may have to fabricate one yourself using the old rusty one as a template.
good luck!
