The shift-up light system is totally isolated from any functional aspect of the car, it's just a relay that powers a light. 12v comes through the temp sensor and/or the vacuum switch & 5th gear switch. Ground comes through the throttle position sensor. A tach signal comes through the ignition amplifier (or control unit, depending on year). When all the right things happen, the relay lights up the light.
If disconnecting the temp sensor changes the idle, the only thing I can guess is that there is a wiring problem somewhere messing with grounds, or *maybe* the connectors for the cruise control vacuum switch and shift up light vacuum switch got swapped and that is resulting in a vacuum leak somehow.
The whole system is completely self-contained - it was a bolt-in system for emissions requirements. There just isn't any connection to anything functional in the car.
