I do the same thing except I cut it on an angle which makes it a bit more difficult, but then if you face the cut away from the potential leak, the theory is that it will shed rather than leak.
To further hide it, I have the open area where the latch is, and the use the black urethane ( NOT SILICONE ) to seal the edge using a rubber glove to smooth it in one swipe / motion.
Silicone is an evil thing to have around cars, and should never be used anywhere near something that is being painted just FYI.
