I've talked to a mechanically inclined fellow that said he did pinion bearings using the Hayne manual. String, fish scale etc. The trans teardown and putting back together is pretty straightforward. The pinion bearing preload requires the pinion shaft be held securely while the 1&7/8" nut is tightened with a BF wrench. Another option along the lines of the RS suggestion would be to ship just the pinion shaft and bearing housing to a shop that is set up for the work. I did that at a shop in the Northwest. Took that mechanic about 15 minutes with the right setup. If you have a pre 89 trans there is a good chance the cluster shaft and bearing need replacing.
