I JUST did some investigative and repair work a couple of weeks ago with the rear bearings of my 92 900S.
There was a distinct low roaring tone that became noticeable around 10mph and increased in pitch up to about highway speeds. It was entirely based on road speed and not engine load. And it was coming from the back.
Removed the rim covers, pried the axle nut cover off and used a pipe extension on the axle nuts to break them loose. I paid close attention to the angle of the breaker bar when I started the breaker process.
Jacked the car up, removed wheels, unbolted and fastened the calipers out of they way, then removed the axle nut and pulled the disc rotors off.
It was immediately apparent; the axle grease was more like thick crumbly cake frosting. It had dried out. I carefully extracted the ball bearings and pulled the bearing races out (1 from each side of rotor), cleaned everything up, re-installed the bearings and races and then packed new bearing grease into the bearing space.
Re-assembled (paying close attention to the re-tightening; I wish I had made a mark on the nut before breaking loose for better reference and recollection when tightening back up).
The noise difference is considerable; the car sounds new (at least quiet enough that I'm noticing some soft rattle coming from the right rear; I think I need to tighten a trailing arm).
Not a bad repair effort. Fairly simple. Took about three hours (most time was spent separating, cleaning and replacing the bearings in the rotor hubs).
