Just went through something very similar on my 1990 SPG. After numerous ideas and tweaks, it turned out that the panhard rod gaskets...one on either end that is rubber with a metal center sleeve...had rusted frozen to the bolts. So, as you torque up the rear suspension going over bumps or say, up into the driveway when you get home, the gasket is not moving around the bolt. Hence, the thump.
My independent shop, Viking Auto in MD tried to free up the bolt from the center metal insert to no avail though they did get the entire metal sleeve to turn so while not functioning the way it was originally intended, it is doing the job....no more knocking for the time being.
In the end, though, I will have to eventually have the entire rod either cut out or somhow manipulated to replace the gaskets.
I would try to see if your shop can get the two gaskets out and replace them. As you say tightening them down helps a bit, do not be surprised if that is the issue.
Keep everyone updated!
Good luck!
