I'm not going to discourage this practice as I always try to recover the most amount of oil from the gearbox and then renew it with all new rather than mixing it up old and new.
So, one of the challenges if you have a turbo car, is the turbo support bracket on the forward side cover of the gearbox -- the bolts are easy to get to if the turbo bracket has been modified -- if not, you'll have to take off the bracket, probably having to crack open the lower bolts on the turbo which can be a PITA. If you do get the bracket off, then there is a small section that needs to be bent over so the one pesky bolt head can be uncovered and you can easily remove the side cover at that time.
If you have a non turbo car, then the bracket obstacle doesn't exist.
