Sounds like the brushes are getting too short to make good contact. Check the ground wire from the alternator case to body ground. If you take your jumper cables to connect the alternator case to body ground and the battery light issues go away, then you know it is just a weak ground connection. In a pinch on the road, I have removed the brush pack assembly and pulled the brushes out gently to stretch the braided wires to allow better contact until I could make a permanent fix. Your local alternator/starter shop can install new brushes for about $10. It appears your voltage regulator/diode pack is OK and only the brushes are worn.
