Sorry, this one's a little long....

I am perplexed with this issue and hoping that members of this community may be able to help. The car is an early 1986 SPG, and the problem is that the front passenger side axle pops out of the inner driver disabling the vehicle.

The background: the boot was torn and I ordered a replacement axle locally. I casually compared it to the one taken out and both seemed to be the same length (about 24 ¼”). I installed it along with several other maintenance items that I was doing concurrently (new wheel bearing pressed in, new ball joints, etc) and unfortunately disposed of the old axle. I took the car out for a test run, and about 2 miles in, the axle popped out of the inner driver while making a right turn, damaging the inner driver. Had the car towed home and did some research on Saabnet and other places.

My research showed that Saab had made a change to the inner driver, and I guess to the axle, in mid year 1986 - my car is an early production 1986. I replaced the inner driver with a good used one from a 1987 transmission. The replacement is the newer style driver with 2 ribs vs the older style which has 3 ribs. I also noticed that the driver that was damaged in my incident was also the new 2 ribbed style so I guess it must have been replaced at some time by a previous owner. I purchased another new axle (24 ¼”) and installed everything. Took it for a test run and again, the axle popped out.

At this point, I’m at a loss to determine why this is happening, and how I might fix it. Has anyone else experience a similar problem, or have suggestions on how I might fix the issue? It seems like I need an axle that is about an inch longer..??
