Sloppy steering? Posted by ChrisMiami [Email] (#1592) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ChrisMiami) on Thu, 7 Jul 2016 13:05:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My first car was a 1971 VW Beetle and its steering box was basically a two-gear arrangement. As it aged, the teeth on one of the gears started breaking off and eventually I had to spin the wheel around twice before it'd catch on either side. It made cornering a real adventure!
Lately, I've noticed in my 93 900 Conv that I'm starting to get the same feeling. There's play in the steering before it "catches' on either side. With a rack-and-pinion, I'm not sure what the mechanicals are doing - is that even possible? I'm hoping it's not something seriously about to break and leave me on the turnpike without a way to steer safely.
What do you think it could be? Do I need a new rack or will new tie rod ends help or maybe just some fluid?
Thanks!
Chris
