1. Check position of sliding splined coupler between cluster (layshaft) gear and front gear that is retained with external circlip. Sleeve is installed with its recessed end facing towards layshaft.
2. Check condition of free cylindrical rollers in bearing on front gear that couples to cluster gear. I've seen chipped rollers there. Also ensure that all rollers are installed. Early trannies had 13 free rollers; later (89+) trannies had 15. Same roller p/n in Saab EPC, different gears.
3. Needle bearing located inside front case eats into layshaft.
