My only symptom of a bad hg in a 2.1L was a slow loss of coolant... topped off every 2-3 weeks. Could not find where it was going... then one day, the hg blew, car sounded like a tractor... pits in the block even from slow coolant leakage through the hg.

May not be your problem, but something to watch for. Good luck!
