Water pump clearance between impeller and housing? Posted by JonH [Email] (#3776) [Profile/Gallery]

1993 900S n/a. I have two used genuine SAAB water pumps, both with low mileage. In the photo below, ~25,000 miles on the one on the left one, and ~20,000 miles on the one on the right. New genuine SAAB pumps are NLA. I prefer to install one of these in my car, rather than a new aftermarket pump, because I believe the genuine SAAB pumps are likely to last longer.
Here's the problem. The one on the left has .060" clearance between the impeller and the housing, while the one on the right has zero clearance (cannot fit a .001" feeler gauge in.). I suspect that the pump with zero clearance is compromised. If anyone has either a new or used pump in their possession, would you help me out by checking the clearance with a feeler gauge? Thanks!
