Re-torque of head bolts after engine rebuild questi Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Tue, 31 Jan 2017 08:29:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am seeing a lot of
conflicting information regarding the need to re-torque the head bolts after a warm-up following my engine rebuild. I've installed the head and done the 2-stage torque + 1/4 turn procedure. It's my spare engine and I'm not going to drop it into the car until Spring, So I've got plenty of time to solicit some good advice.
Bentley says nothing at all about this. The factory manual (2.1 Basic Engine) says to run the engine for 30 minutes, let it cool then slacken and re-tighten the bolts as before. The Haynes manual says to re-torque after 600 miles. The Townsend Saabmaster page says there's no need to re-torque the newer style gaskets, but also on his page there's a factory service bulletin for 1994 and later heads that says re-torque at the first factory maintenance opportunity.
In searching and reviewing the database, there's a consistent thread saying that this is not necessary at all anymore - essentially that the "new stretch bolts" make this procedure obsolete. A lot of discussion about these bolts being made to take this stretch only once.
Can I please get the opinion of the folks that have done this before (lately)? God knows I will lose my mind if I shear one of these off into the block after getting the whole lump transferred into the car and starting it up. Thanks in advance.
