I've owned a half dozen 900s and bought my first automatic a few years ago, a '92 turbo convertible. I still have a couple others with the 5 speed so they all get driven in the summers. I have to say that I really enjoy the automatic more than the manuals. These cars are not fast by today's standards, even in manual trans form, so the cruising nature of the autobox is fine with me. The other issue I have with the man trannies is that they have never been the easiest to shift and they are pretty miserable compared to the latest transmission designs. The clutch hydraulics are not the most reliable In the world either.
I think that one of the early road tests I read involving the automatic noted that it is a good match for the turbo engine for whatever reason. If you drive it and enjoy it, then buy it and maintain it.
Keep in mind that the manual trans isn't the most reliable thing on the planet either, especially when coupled with the turbo engine, and parts for it are scarce as well.
