'82 900 Turbo- What To Look For When Buying? Posted by eric in vermont [Email] (#2058) [Profile/Gallery] (more from eric in vermont) on Sat, 8 Apr 2017 19:11:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey Classic 900 Saabers,
I have 5 vintage Saabs- two Sonetts and three 96's- and post often on the Vintage Saab and Sonett forums here on TSN...
Well, an older lady stopped by the house today and told me that her husband was getting too old to drive his pride and joy- his "black beauty" and it was time to sell it. It's a 1982 3 door 900 turbo- black of course, with burgundy interior. I went over for a quick look today and the car appears to be in excellent condition both inside and out. There's a rust bubble near the bottom edge of the rear spoiler and one at the bottom of the driver's rear fender lip at the back. I wasn't able to drive it, as the driveway is muddy and could I come back in a week or two when things dry out? He bought the car in 1984 and it had 120k on it, and it now has 168k. So 48k miles in 33 years! I asked about maintenance- he couldn't really say (dementia has set in, sadly) and she gave me the name of a local mechanic who does oil changes and the like. She told me that about 10 years ago, a new headliner was installed and something about "the computer" a couple of years ago. Engine was a little grimey. Undercarriage looked excellent. I asked him if he drove it in the winter and he said "oh yes" and his wife immediately corrected him "you never drove that car in the winter, except at first." Oh boy...many of us are heading there... So I don't believe it's had many Vermont winters with salty roads, if at all.
Anyway, I know all the in's and out's of V4's- rebuilt several from the ground up including engine and transmission rebuilds- but I really don't know these. So some advice would be appreciated!
What should I look for mechanically with this particular car?
And what maintenance items would be common for these at this point?
I've looked at the classified's and these are kind of all of the map price-wise. I asked her for a ball-park and I she said " around $4000". That seems in the right range... comments on price?
And obviously, I NEED another Saab! And given that 900's are now welcome in the Vintage Saab Club of North America, it makes perfect sense!
Thanks very much!
