Just thinking, a similar thing happened to my father's Honda Fit. He has always bought Hondas and taken them to the dealer for repairs, since '84 or so. On a cross country drive out to visit me, his Fit threw a CEL. Got here fine, and I pulled the codes: misfire on cylinder 2. Fine, I think, it could be a million things, so I google it and it turns out this spark plug backing out thing is common. So I tell him I'll retorque the plugs. I'm 29, been working on cars 12 of those years, and he doesn't trust me that that's it.
Well it was the plug all right. I saved his Fit in the nick of time - plug had backed out about five or six turns. Got him a new plug and compared it with the old one. It almost looked like the crush washer was bad. Like it hadn't been fully crushed, but it wasn't the same shape as a new one. I dunno. I torqued that thing to the high end of the range the manual gave, but I'll probably worry forever. And speaking of bad design, I bet it takes 20 hours to swap an engine on one of those too. You can't even see the plugs way back underneath the expansive dashboard that starts after the hood opening ends. You have to do everything by feel!
Did your wife's car throw a check engine light before grenading?
