hatchback lid wiring question

I have a 1988 900 turbo that looks great overall, but there are some cosmetic blemishes on the hatchback lid, and I found a replacement part that was much cheaper than paint-and-dent repair. Anyway, the replacement part has about two feet of length of each of two wire bundles that come out from near the hinges. I fully expected that I would be able to pull out around that much wire on the tailgate that is currently installed. I was surprised that I could only pull out about 4 inches of wire. So my dilemma is this: do I just cut what is there and cut the wires on the replacement tailgate short also, and then splice them together and go with that? Or is it worth getting under the headliner to feed more wire out so I have more to play with in case I ever need to put the original back on? Am I overthinking this?
