OK, I finished the diagnostics and it still wouldn't start - which was bewildering. So I mixed a drink and walked myself back through the whole process. I did have no spark originally, and I did correctly deduce that I'd broken a previously repaired wire leading to the distributor. But then, all further tests checked out!
About halfway through the vodka tonic I was pondering this over, I decided to do something original and re-test the spark at the plugs - lo and behold, I had spark, but still no start. I then asked myself what I had done that could possibly screw with fueling. Immediately I remembered that I had had to loosen and disengage the starter to swap out the flywheel and that the fuel line was very near to that part of the engine. Looking down beneath the throttle body, (sure enough!) I noted that in tightening up the starter, the fuel line had gotten pinched between the throttle body support and the starter body.
So, what I had originally was 2 problems (self-inflicted double continuum whammy). So, when it seems that nothing makes any sense, it is always a good time to step back and start with the simple things from the beginning.
Life is hard. It is even harder when you are stupid.
