I've removed both rear hubs from my 92 900S with my bare hands. Once you remove the big axle nut, they simply slid right off the "axle" shafts.
I removed and replaced the rear bearings because the grease seems to have dried up and the bearings were starting to make noise.
I don't remember if a special tool was called for when I was researching the job.
I do remember paying close attention to where my breaker bar was when I loosened the nuts and made sure to get the breaker bar (and thus, nut) back to that same spot when I tightened everything on re-assembly.
