Remember that the ECM doesn't store codes between restarts, so you basically need to generate the code (light on) and then retrieve it right away.... if you shut the car down, the code will disappear.
The system is pretty brain dead, so a main valve code could be a few functional things that all show up as "the main valve isn't doing what it's supposed to" - things like low fluid for example can set a 1222. Similarly, just because the valve's coil is good doesn't necessarily mean it's good. In your situation I would personally suspect the main valve block as having a problem. And, really, it's not like you can buy parts for repair anyway, so....
