Meant to answer soon.
A coil is a transformer. In a car, it steps up the 12v to the higher voltage necessary to arc across a spark plug.
Transformers (coils) are open (resistance check meaning very high resistance) between the primary and secondary and low (short) between output and secondary.
I would suspect that corrosion on the terminal may have caused increased resistance which resulted in heat generation at that terminal which melted the terminal.
