Scott-- I commend you for your dogged pursuit in the clutch R&R job-- perhaps not as painful as a steering rack replacement, but a PITA just the same. Good on you for hanging in there and "gittin' 'er done"! Thanks, also, for posting the saga of your trials and errors in the course of getting the job done. As you suggest at the top of your post, your thorough review of what went right and some that went wrong could save another from repeating those errors.
It isn't easy to admit mistakes but, in my experience, it's only through my mistakes and efforts to fix them that I've ever learned anything of lasting value. Thanks for sharing your story, I hope you can keep that '89 on the road for many years to come, and it sounds like you have the chops to make that happen.
