I'd say for 3 speeds, the gearing is fairly tall already, no? These are not cars that are meant to be fast off the line! I get upper shift points of around 40km/h and 80-90km/h and it will very quickly downshift at higher speeds... however doing so is loud and probably damaging so I really do not do that anymore... Really, the automatic c900's that I have driven respond much better to throttle (kick down etc) than many modern car. Given what it is, SAAB engineers imho did an amazing job of mating it to the car. *BUT* they really should have spec'ed a transmission with a 4th gear.
I think either of the cars Roger is looking at sound great in terms of mileage and if the bodies are in great condition (no rust is key!!!) then that is mostly what matters assuming he is keen to work on these cars a little. Lots of rubber parts will be aging by now, so either of these cars is likely to need some work, but it should not be a big deal. Part of the fun of owning these is working on them.
Though some here daily drive their c900's, they are getting to the point where nice examples are better used as fun cars rather than commuters... so the whole issue of stick vs auto might be less an issue? Also, it's not like the standard transmission is bomb proof and hooligan proof in these cars anyway... it still wears out before the motor usually, so I would basically not sweat it - drive the automatic until it croaks, then decide what to do...
